Miracles of Classical Homoeopathy. Chapter 14

Diabetes Mellitus – Curable, but Depends (1996)

A 38-year-old man walked into my clinic, on a rather balmy Thursday, with Diabetes Mellitus. This chronic condition was diagnosed around seven years ago, following a blood test, after he experienced increased thirst and canine hunger. Though he tried Syzygium mother tincture and various other home remedies, there was no respite. When he underwent a blood test three months ago, the fasting blood sugar level stood at 240 mg/dl. He complained of profound weakness and pricking pain on the soles of his feet. He was thermally a hot patient, but had a craving for lukewarm food and tepid drinks. He also complained of failing memory. He found it difficult to recollect names and dates. His appetite was normal, bowel movements regular and he had sound sleep. He had a stuffy nose along with cough, cold and sneezing for the past forty five days.

Treatment

Medorrhinum, an anti sycotic, in high potency was able to give this person a satisfactory relief. In my early years of practice I used to give two doses of the medicine, one at bed time and the second dose, next day morning. This was on the assumption that the diet of the patient may influence the very first dose. But later, I found that one dose is more than sufficient. Acute medicines are given as and when required.

Discussion

Auto-immune, metabolic and life-style diseases are miasmatic in nature and can be cured only with deep acting, anti-miasmatic and constitutional medicines. Many homoeopaths prescribe mother tinctures and superficially acting medicines, which can give only temporary relief to the patients. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic maismatic disease acquired by an individual through years or even generations, influenced by multiple factors such as genes, life-style, environment, psychic makeup, mental and physical stresses in life, bad effects of poisonous food, medicines, among others. It requires deep acting miasmatic medicines coupled with lifestyle and environmental changes for a complete cure.

But the scope of Homoeopathy in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus is very limited for many reasons. Primarily, the physician should be an experienced Classical homoeopath with deep-rooted understanding of the fundamentals of Homoeopathy. Errors or missteps can happen at various stages of the long and delicate treatment process – from case- taking, analysing the case, proper administration of the medicine to follow-up observations, subsequent prescriptions, observance of diet and regimen by the patient. Since the success of the treatment depends on multiple factors, failure rate is high.

In the above case, the patient was much disciplined and followed the diet restrictions religiously. He was instructed to test his blood for fasting and post prandial sugar and report regularly. The feedback was prompt and satisfactory. And, finally he was cured of his illness.

“ …we know the What, rather than the How and Why. It is only recently that we have come to realize that we do not know the cause of diabetes mellitus. Nor, for that matter do we know the cause of those great killers, atherosclerosis, coronary thrombosis, and cancer.” - Text Book of Pathology Structure and Function in Disease, 8th edition by William Boyd
